Owners of most established shops say it took them years of hard work to make a name for themselves.
NEW DELHI: Only one question haunts the owners of showrooms along the main road of GK-I, M Block market: "Where do we go?" "The government cannot render us jobless without providing an alternative site to run business," they say. "Traffic jams are not caused by us but by vehicle owners. I do not know how we are responsible for the chaos. If the government wants us to wind up business here, where does it expect us to go? There is no space in the main market either," said Satinder Wadhwa, member, GK Main Road Traders and Professionals Association.
Owners of most established shops say it took them years of hard work to make a name for themselves. "I had all the required licenses from MCD to run this shop.
I am paying electricity bill and other taxes. Lakhs of shops across Delhi will be closed as they are running in residential areas. Where is the space in regularised markets?" asked Praveen Jain, owner of Diamonte Jewels. Apart from the worries over an uncertain future, the shop owners are also angry that the MCD filled its coffers with their money when it could. "As I understand the situation, a list will be published in 10 days. No one is sure about what will eventually happen but the ball is in the government's court. Let's see how they handle the situation," said Ashish Jain, owner of Anmol Jewelleryline.
Said Ramesh Rakheja, secretary of Kalkaji market association: "We are planning to hold a meeting within a couple of days to discuss the situation. I think the government needs a jolt and if things work out according to plan, we will shut all shops permanently." Said Satpal Khurana, owner of an electronics shop: "This move is practically impossible. There are over 3,000 shopkeepers here, while the main market has only 50 shops. Let's see what will happen if we shut shops."
